What does the CO logo mean???

The CO (Chill Out) logo is a symbol that aims to replace Carbon (C) & Carbon Dioxide (CO2) on the periodic table.
Essentially, this new symbol will encourage students to Chill Out (CO) & minimise their Carbon (C/CO2) footprint in the process... meaning more CO (Chill Out) & less C/CO2 (Carbon) which is the underlying purpose of the initiative.
=
The word CO could also become a buzz word with students as an abbreviation for Chill Out whilst also forming the beginning of the words COmmunity, CO-operation & CO-creation - the core elements of this project.

Fan Leaflet Mock-up

Student Feedback:
"I really like it!"
"It's very clever!"
"Does the logo have to be repeated so many times across the back? surely it's just a waste of ink. Also it looks a bit shouty, as in it tells you to Chill Out like 9 times!"
-
The repetition of the CO logo on the back is a waste of ink therefore the final design will not have this.

beer mats & ice cream
Date: 10 December 2007 14:23:28
Hi Jack,
Right, i was just giving this beer mat design a bit of thought... first of all i'm thinking they would be found in the halls of residence bars. If they don't have a bar at the halls then we could also have them at the SU to ensure more freshers see them but essentially the halls is where we want them to be seen..
When students are out having a drink they are chilling out with friends.. however, are they really chilling out???? the likelyhood is that many of them have left their lights on at home. Therefore they are doing the opposite!
I was thinking that an alternative message could be along the lines of "Are you really chilling out?" This would be in the heat sensitive ink... then the logo & other info? chances are they probably can't remember if their light is on or off because this action is not a memorable experience - it is something we do everyday without realising.
cheers dan

The above idea doesn't use the correct tone of voice based on the student feedback so we will go with the original idea.
Student Feedback:
"We don't want to be told what to do!"
" 'Ice cream anyone?' offers something without being too forceful."

Good shout on the poster. I've run it by the students and they all prefer the first one so we'll stick with that.
Yup the badge will be square with two rounded edges so the logo fits on it perfectly. Perhaps glow in the dark if they're to be given out at the night-time event?
Perhaps include some non glow in the dark one in the box as well?
20.30's fine mate. When you get to the station go up the stairs to the station tram stop and there'll be two tramlines. Both will go to the Uni so it doesn't matter which one you get on. Get off at the Trent Uni stop, the same one as last time, and i'll meet you there. Call me when you arrive at the train station and I'll set off to the tram stop.

yeh thats really nice . what are you thinking with the poster? also, i think the badge should be square to reflect the logo & keep things cohesive with the other designs.. glad we cleared up the perspective thing - its an idea im proud of but it clearly doesn't fit.

I'd forgotten about the thermometer and warning sign to be honest. They're good and clever ideas but are out of place in this campaign I reckon. Defo ditch the global/local sign, a way round the themometer is to have the square chill out logo at the bottom and style it appropriately as shown in the attathment. It would work as just a fridge magnet design if not a fully working themometer.

i'd rather put the poster with the original lights on my wall. I think it looked trendier. just my opinion though - lets ask the students and see what they think.
I think boxing everything up is too simple and a bit plain for a cool poster. It doesn't make your eyes wander as much as the original lights one did. I think i can see what you're trying to do with the whole periodic table feel but im not too sure the students would put it on their wall.
I think it would work well with the new logo aswell as the CO is contained in a box emphasising the seperation from the lights and the chilling out.

haha well i did have a brand spankin' new design up my sleave which still involves many different lights but in a way that blends in the new boxed logo easier. I've attatched the sketch and I will see what the students think before I crack on.

quality mate, i'm having second thoughts about the thermometer magnet. think we should just do a magnet with the logo on it. what do you think. also do you think that if we discard local warning/global warming it would be better - it's looking out of place at the moment.
lights???
Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2007 11:08:10
awesome mate,
for the poster r u gonna still use the different lights with the new logo in the middle? i still really like the lights a think its a really cool visual. it also emphasises the different personalities of each student etc etc.. or do u have a brand new amazing poster design up your sleave?

Logo designs
Date: 09 December 2007 21:31:48
Here are the new logo designs. There's a variety here. 'Chil-out-logos-variety.jpg' gives some explanations and reasons behind the designs and the other files show the logos in isolation to give you a better idea of how they would work. I've got ones I prefer but just wondering what one(s) you think will work best with the new style. I'll ask my course mates tomorrow aswell.
Cheers, Jack

The idea behind these stickers is that if you discover a left on light switch you can fill in the name and stick one around the switch. Bit like name and shame really. It's just a bit of fun really and to be honest they'll probably just be stuck everywhere after day one, might even get some ppl sticking them on street lights, who knows? Either way seeing them will be a reminder of the 'Chill Out' presence.

Student Feedback:
"I like these because they seem to point fun at existing campaigns which set out to be all serious... These stickers are far from serious and if anything are a bit geeky and uncool for us students, however i think that is what makes them more appealing."

Chill Out pack designs

Here are two options for the new box design. The ink/paper will be heat reactive so the words turn from blue to red as the box is taken out of the fridge and warms up. Not sure what copywrite to choose at the moment. Any suggestions? I'm swaying towards 'hello hot stuff though'. At the bottom of the box can be quirky suggestions on how to re-use the box: hat, swear pot, origami instructions...etc.
Jack
Student Feedback:
Which copy do you like more? (we asked 20 students)
'Hello' OR 'Hey, hot stuff'
17 students liked the 'Hey, hot stuff' copy more because it's more quirky and fun.

Yo matey,
Attatched is the fan leaflet design I've done on illustrator and Indesign. The idea is the blue and white pages will be alternative to each other though they're not all in order atm. I've got some more stuff to send in a bit if my internet stays well behaved! I'm sending it bit by bit so my computer don't start sweating lol
As I was saying on the phone the last style was a bit over the top and I feel we were trying to be too different in the look so I've simplifyed the style into something with a fun, friendly and down to earth personality.
Our target market research and own experience told us that students like to know the facts but nott feel like they’re being nagged at. Inspired by the innocence brand (which is extremely popular amongst students) the design ‘talks’ to the students in a friendly, non-nagging, but informative kind of way.
Without bombarding them with boring information in a dull way we realise that students are busy and have to be engaged to pay attention. The copywrite is clear, quirky and relevant and the design reinforces this friendly ‘we’re in this together’ feel.
The campaign has a personality unlike many faceless ‘worrying’ global warming campaigns that tell you you must do something, this campaign delievers the information in a calm understandable way and invites them to become part of the fun community project.
The pale blue colour scheme gives the campaign a fresh and youthful tone of voice an the font is fun bubbly and lively, suiting the desired tone of voice we want to speak to these students with.
I'll send the other stuff soon hopefully and let me know what do you think.
Cheers!

Is the invite effective?

Student Feedback:
"Yeah, the invites pretty intrigueing especially because you have to turn off your light to read it!"
"I like the way the ice cream contained within the lightbulb has a direct link to the name 'Chill Out'"
"I think an invitation is much more personal than the usual student flyers handed out on a daily basis."
"Because it's glow in the dark & a bit different i'd probably keep this."
"Yeah, i'd probably stick it on my wall!"
