Hi Jack,
Heres a really clever way to tackle climate change within a community environment!
http://blog.bitepr.com/2007/04/bite_launches_f.html

"Spare-the-Air Day! - In yet another bold move to fight the effects of global warming, Bite has decided to practice what it preaches. Today, for the duration of the entire day, Bite’s offices will make a major contribution to stop global warming by refraining from speech – reducing hot air released into the atmosphere in a big way, according to management’s estimate."

Just some more research...

THE ARTICLE:

Act now before it snowballs!!!
Press release dated 2nd July 2007

"The weather may be unpredictable at the moment, but Bradford Council is confidently forecasting snow in the city centre on Tuesday 10th July 2007

Approximately 20 tonnes of real snow is to be dropped in Centenary Square to encourage people to think about climate change.

The Council's climate change awareness programme has a slogan 'act now before it snowballs' and has a theme of conflicting seasons to reflect the changes to the world's weather as a result of global warming."

You had any more ideas? Do you want to have a skype convo some time this week to discuss our best ideas and how they could be developed? my weekend at my sisters halls was an eye opener to the whole student energy wasting issues. I will explain my findings when i speak to you next.

Cheers

Save energy while you sleep

The Insight: Students stay up late & sleep during the day. - even if they stay in they still stay up late wasting uneccasary energy.
-
Could we encourage students to go to bed earlier when staying in (by displaying the benefits)??
-
Student Feedback:
"Probably not."
"At uni you don't want to be lectured or told to do something!"
"Even if students are aware of the benefits they will just stay up late anyway!"

FLICK OFF/Drop Beats Not Bombs

Quality stuff jack,

Completely agree with what your saying about those websites. I certainlywouldn't be on them either if it wasn't for this project! & I think that’s the main problem, we want to be entertained not bored to death by rubbish layouts &a lack of colour!

Here’s a website that employs humour to convey a serious message.

http://www.flickoff.org/

It's called FLICK OFF! I like the way it uses FLICK throughout the website to convey a double meaning. i.e. "ARE WE FLICKED?" & "GOFLICK YOURSELF!"

Also, a recent pop culture trend of the last few years that focused on current globalissues were lollipop t-shirts (think that’s what they're called anyway!) Phrases on these famous tees included... "Make love not war" & "drop beats not bombs". i really like this tone of voice - do something positive, not something negative.

boring websites

Here are a few links you may want to check out:

http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/briefing_notes/climate_solutions.pdf - though the main one to aim at students would be the CFL Bulbs one and the standby one. (3 cfl bulbs in every household would close down a nuclear powerplant!!!)
http://peopleandplanet.org/gogreen/unis notice how bland, unemotional, nagging and serious everything is. The only thing keeping me on this site was because of this project. I wouldn't normally give it a 20 second look with such a poor layout.
http://www.climatesafe.co.uk/this this ones pretty down to earth though it could be improved big time.

Good research mate,

That condom campaign was good (Using humour) although it lacked a clear call to action."95 per cent agreed that climate change is an important issue...Students feel that not enough is being done to combat climate change.

There were low satisfaction ratings...Although Friends of the Earth's survey shows high student recognition that climate change is a problem, research shows that those aged between 18 and 22 are the least informed about the solutions" This is interesting.

It's encouraging to read that students generally care but it seems they're bombarded with 'save the planet' like taglines so much they're never really offered any simple solutions on how to do so. My research backs this up, there're so many lame looking websites nagging about how we should stop climate change but that's about it.

I've got some links on the way!Jack

I like your idea as it acknowledges that students are lazy when it comes tothis kind of stuff. It has a down to earth tone about it "we know there aren't any ice caps near your S.U. and you have other things to worry aboutand so lets make things cheaper and easier for you..."

We need something refreshing, quirky, down to earth and practical. SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE CALL TO ACTION

Oh! And I brought a 'green organic' tesco bag today, go me! :) haha

could we challenge the student lifestyle?

Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2007 16:45:31
From: tex5df@leeds.ac.uk
To: Jack Larner

Hi jack,

maybe... We could just challenge the student lifestyle!Like your not a "proper student" if you don't try and cut corners like sharewashing, cooking one meal as a house to save money on ingredients, swap/reuseone another’s clothes and borrow library books from the library instead ofbuying them etc etc. In order to save cash for another night out before thenext loan comes in...

See this link as well and let me know what you think!

Recycling at supermarkets

Maybe we could have a special recycling station outside supermarkets so you can offload your waste in an environmentally friendly way before doing the weekly shop?
