Some development

Quick Meeting (M'chr - GMEX)

The poster was discussed and we came to the conclusion that it would be made up of several different types of lights that would all connect to one central part of the poster.
Then when it is dark the logo will illuminate and all of the lights will dissapear. This demonstrates the students turning their lights off as they decide to 'Chill Out'.

What do the students think of Switch stickers?

Student feedback:
"A happy/sad face won't remind me to turn my light off."
"I wouldn't stick that on my light switch and if it was already stuck on I would probably rip it off!"
"A £ sign won't convince me, in halls we pay the same amount regardless of the amount of electricity we use!"
"How does a burnt down tree relate to me leaving my light on? I don't get it!"

Hey here's the first batch of visual style developments I’ll send the next in a min so not to give my laptop such a hard time. I've stuck with the 'cool the world' theme/insight. The slogans 'be cool, and chill out are examples to show off the style. I'll explain more about them on skype.

THE MAIN EVENT - Chill Outside!

Following the introduction of the fresher pack on the students first day an event will take place outside the students halls of residence... this event aims to 'invite' students to switch off their lights when they leave their halls. The concept of the event is to turn off your lights, go outside and eat ice cream! The students are effectively being encouraged to Chill Outside, the underlying purpose of the initiative!
From the students perspective the event is appealing as it gives them the opportunity to meet new people, which is what uni is all about! In conjunction, the environmentally friendly ice cream on offer is too good to resist!

see things from another perspective...

Hello mate

the write up so far - feel free to add.
I will photograph the 'perspective flyer' in the morn... you need to see it to understand it's full beauty & innovation!I’ve also attached a possible identity for the Global issue/Local solution. Its nothingspecial but it's what inspired the folds for the perspective flyer.

RSA Video

There are rising levels of CO2 – beach ball
This changes the climate – fresher pack exterior
Some places are getting hotter whilst some are getting cooler.
– Beer mat, poster
Sea levels will rise – Thermometer fridge magnet

WARNING – reduce carbon emissions now/ act quickly – maybe warming/warning perspective thing?

Look at how we live and then look to sensibly reduce carbon emissions. Community engagement. – Students leave stuff on.

Skills required...

Communication – A tone of voice students are not familiar with when looking at serious global issues.
Visualisation – The effects of climate change. Visualising CO2.
(To appeal to the target group) – everything is fun or ‘Cool’

Look at motivations and attitudes of the target group – I need to see results or the effects etc. – visual reminders.
Halls of residence – student community will be very easy to focus on.
– This is our focus.

Design outputs...

Documented – written, photos, film, multimedia
Broader appreciation – look at materials, are they reusable?
This is integral to our fresher pack and strategy.
Understanding the system (i.e. the student community for us) – the context of use is EXTREMELY important – in relation to the product.

A collaborative approach gains the most insight. – Might be able to incorporate our experience with co-creation here? I’ve got all the notes from Alicante with the various systems we used when collaborating.

Clear definition of the thought process – well researched – considers a number of options. – Previous ideas – website research etc.

Product design – look at the use of the product – how will it encourage behavioural change? Visual reminders – fun and engaging

Looking for BIG IDEAS and small ideas that have a BIG IMPACT.

STOP!

From: Daniel Fleming
To: Jack Larner

Very true... it's looking more and more like we need to persuade students to STOP doing stuff like leaving stuff on than to start doing something extra. I'll keep thinking! That place in Notts is called bcs creative btw & the person i met from there was Emilie. Their website needs a bit of work! Yours is in another league!

making sandwiches are just too much effort!

I was thinking of including the leaflets in individual mini sandwich typebags fondly enough. The cool bag idea's a good one but going back to what Dan T was saying about it should be as effortless as possible, I know from my ownand others' experience that making your own lunch requires a surprisingly large amount of effort when mum isn't making it for you! Getting up earlier, buying the ingredients etc. and making a campaign based on that is going tobe a very uphill struggle. And whenever you do make packed lunch, you alwaysend up eating it all then buying cafeteria food anyway lol I reckon its a good idea to be part of the campaign but maybe not the thingto base the campaign around we can discuss it on skype.
I'll let you know when I'm next available for Skype with my home internet situation mate. I'm just getting some designs on the go for the fresher pack i'll show some concepts when im done.

put subway out of business?

In hindsight I’ve had second thoughts with regards to the umbrella idea. It might be a bit contradictory (can't spell!) if we are handing out unusable umbrellas because that would be a waste of materials!

I had another idea though which might be worth a discussion...The fresher pack could be contained in an 'extremely cool/trendy!!!' cooler bag for your sandwiches thus making it reusable. It could therefore encourage students to make their own sandwiches for lunch esp. when going in for a busyday at Uni??? & maybe these bags could be personalised by the student in someway to make them more unique and less conformist?

Why would we do this?
Buying meal deals at Uni can be expensive and create alot of rubbish.ProblemStudents buy lunch at the SU for convenience.

Maybe we can overcome this?
we need to some how make making your own sandwiches cool... also bear in mindthere are social aspects like making the sandwiches to begin with, then wheneating them with friends!!! Also sandwiches are such a broad category, thereare so many options!!! Our subway on Thursday inspired me!

- How much do you think we spend on lunch at Uni in a week? I'd say we spendloads even though it's much cheaper to make our own lunches! & you can also keep them fresher with a really cool cooler bag!Perhaps this could be the main problem we identify???

I know it is coming away from the student accommodation focus but we are actually asking the student to make this change at home before they leave for Uni...(i.e. make your lunch) in the same way we might ask them to turn the lights, heating, TV & computer off when they leave the place!

The focus could now be about changing your habits before leaving your student accommodation.Loughborough was class btw. will tell you all about it on skype. when are you free to skype?

umbrella feedback

Date: Mon 19 Nov 2007 11:30:25
From: Jack Larner j16l@hotmail.co.uk
To: Daniel Fleming

Hey mate how was Loughborough on Friday night? Im yet to check Facebook for more brilliant photos! Lol

that umbrella idea sounds funny as long as the reason they're there's madeclear somehow. How about a message printed on the inside so when the student looks up at the holes the message is revealed. Or when the umbrella is givenout a leaflet is attached to it. I reckon the first idea is better for thereason that the leaflet will probably get lost leaving the student with apointless umbrella!

Design wise, if these are being given out in the streetseparately from our 'icebreaker' *comedy drum roll* it's important thatthere's some visual consistency so that it ties in nicely with it and theycan go back to their cool fresher pack to see how to improve. Or info could be on the umbrella while the message is still fresh in their heads.I'll get round to filling in that application form today now im at Uni withInternet access!

Speak soon!

an ambiguous idea

Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2007 18:18:03
From: Daniel Fleming
To: Jack Larner

Hi jack,
good work yesterday! Had another idea for promotion etc. Could hand out novelty umbrellas however these umbrellas are not your usual umbrellas! Instead there would be holes in them to represent the holes in the ozone layer. Therefore when you try to protect yourself from bad weather you can't prevent the water from flooding through the holes.Basically global warming (& damage to the ozone layer) creates unusual weather and natural disasters humans can't even prevent. So be sensible and minimisey our carbon footprint now or you might be affected next time it rains (just likeSheffield!!!)
What do you reckon?

Students love glow sticks!

When on a night out every student likes nothing other than a couple of glow sticks on their wrist.
Wearing glow stick wristbands can create a talking point with random strangers in a club (particularly girls). They are cool and generally pretty trendy. For a glow stick to work properly it must be dark! this relates back to our initiative which is to turn your lights off when going out!

Alright mate,

good party last night on skype!!!! I think I’ve got a hangover from all that thinking! Haha.

Anyways i was reading through the brief again today on the train & it states in the brief that we should just identify one area to change.

Our 'share' concept at the moment focuses on several so i think we should explore each one and see which ones bring about the best ideas.

What do you reckon?
